Topi are often worn for religious purposes
Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to keep his head covered. Many Muslims followed this tradition. These sometimes shiny hats are called different names in different places. Sometimes they are not shiny at all.
In Arabic it is called taqiya.
Muslims in South East Asia (Bangladesh, Pakistand, India) call it topi.
In Afghanistan, men wear a wool beret called a pakol, which also refers to a cotton prayer cap.
Muslim men in Somalia often wear the koofiyad a cotton prayer cap.
In Malaysia Men wear the songkok.
Muslim men in Russia wear the tubeteika.
Other religions also wear something similar to the topi.
The Jews use a cap called a kippah.
Sikh followers wear a turban to cover their hair.
Christians bishop and Cardinals wear zucchetto.
